Delhi has removed millions of old vehicles as part of its efforts to reduce air pollution, but the total number of vehicles continues to rise. According to the Delhi Economic Survey 2025-26, vehicle numbers increased by nearly 8% to 8.76 million.
The policy banned older diesel and petrol vehicles, forcing them to be scrapped or moved to other regions. While this successfully removed older, more polluting engines, it did not stop people from buying new vehicles.
Motorcycles and scooters now make up the majority of vehicles in the city. Experts say the main reason is that public transportation is not efficient enough to meet people’s needs.
