Chinese mathematician Wang Hong has gained international attention after solving the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, a problem that had remained unsolved for over a century. Her discovery is considered a major breakthrough in geometric measure theory.
Because of this achievement, Wang is now seen as a strong candidate for the 2026 Fields Medal, one of the highest honors in mathematics. If she wins, she will become the first Chinese woman to receive the award.
In October 2025, Wang received two major mathematics prizes on the same day: the Salem Prize and the Gold Award of the International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians.
