Indonesia remained the most polluted country in Southeast Asia in 2025, even though its air quality improved compared to the previous year. According to IQAir, the country’s PM2.5 level dropped from 35.5 to 30 micrograms per cubic meter, but this is still far above the World Health Organization’s safe limit.
Pollution in Indonesia is mainly caused by coal-fired power plants, traffic and seasonal fires. Smoke from land-clearing fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan also contributes to poor air quality.
While some Southeast Asian countries showed improvement, pollution remains a regional issue that can affect neighboring countries.
