Chinese mathematician Wang Hong has solved a very difficult math problem called the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture. The problem had remained unsolved for about 100 years. Because of this achievement, many people believe she could win the 2026 Fields Medal, one of the most important awards in mathematics.
Wang is 35 years old. If she wins the medal, she will become the first Chinese woman to receive it.
In October 2025, Wang also won two important math prizes: the Salem Prize and the Gold Award of the International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians. These awards recognize young mathematicians who make important discoveries.
