The IQAir 2025 World Air Quality Report highlights that Asia’s most polluted cities are predominantly concentrated in India and China, reflecting the region’s ongoing environmental challenges. A combination of rapid urbanization, industrial emissions, traffic congestion and reliance on fossil fuels has driven pollution levels far beyond the World Health Organization’s recommended thresholds.
India alone accounted for 64 cities in the global top 100 for air pollution, while several Chinese cities also recorded extremely high PM2.5 concentrations. These fine particles pose severe health risks as they penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream.
The findings underscore the urgent need for coordinated policy action and sustainable development strategies to address one of the world’s most pressing public health crises.
