According to the 2025 IQAir World Air Quality Report, only 13 countries and territories met the World Health Organization’s air quality standards. The report analyzed PM2.5 data from over 9,000 cities worldwide.
Most countries failed to meet the safe level, with the highest pollution found in South Asia and parts of Africa. Only 14% of cities met the standard, which is lower than the previous year.
Experts believe the decline in air quality is mainly due to climate change, including wildfires, dust storms and extreme weather events linked to fossil fuel use.
