Only 13 Countries Met Safe Air Quality Standards in 2025

The 2025 IQAir World Air Quality Report reveals that only 13 countries and territories met the World Health Organization’s recommended PM2.5 threshold, highlighting a growing global air pollution crisis. The analysis, based on data from 9,446 cities across 143 regions, shows that the vast majority of locations failed to comply with safe air standards.

Pollution levels were particularly severe in South Asia and parts of Africa, while only 14% of cities met the guidelines, marking a decline from the previous year.

The deterioration in air quality is largely attributed to human-driven climate change, with factors such as wildfires, dust storms and extreme weather events—intensified by fossil fuel consumption—playing a significant role.
