Every Tet holiday, Thanh Tri faces strong social pressure to drink alcohol with older relatives. The 26-year-old communications consultant usually attends many gatherings when he returns to his hometown in Can Tho. At these events, elders often make the first toast and expect younger people to drink with them.
Tri sometimes says he has a stomach problem to avoid drinking, but people still encourage him to join. He decided to quit alcohol completely after becoming seriously ill following a year-end party in 2024.
In recent years, many of his business meetings with Gen Z partners have taken place in cafés or casual restaurants where alcohol is not the main focus.
