Seven men, including suspected members of Japan’s organized crime networks, have been arrested in connection with a robbery involving approximately 420 million yen in Tokyo’s Ueno District. Among those detained is Jinryu Kano, an executive member of a faction within the Yamaguchi-gumi, one of Japan’s largest criminal syndicates.
Investigators allege that the suspects targeted victims carrying large amounts of cash, pepper-sprayed one individual and fled with three suitcases containing the money. Authorities are also examining potential links between this incident and similar attacks reported at nearby transport hubs and at Haneda Airport.
The case has drawn attention because Japan is widely regarded as one of Asia’s safest countries.
